Community Recognition

Sheriff Bowler and the staff at the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office want to take this opportunity to recognize a community member who has inspired so many in his community and continues to protect and serve as a local police officer.

Today we would like to recognize Chief Timothy Sorrell of the Lanesborough Police Department. Chief Sorrell’s career in law enforcement begin in 1987 as a patrol officer with the Lenox Police Department. He then transferred agencies and began working for the Lanesborough Police Department where he currently serves as chief with over 30 years of law enforcement experience. With 30 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, he will tell you that he enjoys serving the community members of Lanesborough and being with his officers within his department. As chief of Lanesborough, his responsibilities include running a staff of both full and part time officers and overseeing a community of over 2,000 members. More importantly, he is a proud husband to a wonderful wife of 27 years and a proud father of two sons.

With over 30 years of law enforcement experience, he proved his ability to lead as chief through real world on the job experiences. Prior to being chief, he was a sergeant and investigator with the Lanesborough Police Department also serving as the departments certified sexual assault investigator. He also was a member of the Berkshire County Drug Task Force helping to investigate some of the counties more serious drug crimes. As chief, he currently serves on the Western Massachusetts Chiefs Association, Massachusetts Chiefs Association and also the Berkshire Law Enforcement Council Force Investigation Team. During his time in law enforcement , he has received 2 letters of commendation for bravery as well as the Mass Cops President Award in 2012. Chief Sorrell also served his country as a proud Marine working in the field of Military Police in South Carolina and MCAS Beaufort.

For those that know him, they know he is passionate when it comes to community policing and being dedicated to the many community members. During his tenure as a police officer, he has volunteered and dedicated his time to not only keeping the community safe, but also helping it succeed. Throughout the years of working with the school system, working on the school committee or the Lanesborough Recreation Committee, his drive to build a better community can’t be matched. When he wasn’t working with the school system, he could be found coaching within the Lanesborough youth sports programs for over 10 years even serving as the Director of Youth Basketball for 13 years. He also spent 13 years on the Berkshire County Law Enforcement Golf Committee that helped raise money for the Berkshire County Kids Place and also is a proud supporter of the Law Enforcement Torch Run which raises money and awareness for the Massachusetts Special Olympics.

Chief Sorrell is just one of many professional and dedicated law enforcement officers in Berkshire County. Many like him go above and beyond their duties as police officers and are truly committed to their communities.
