Assistant Superintendent Michael Huggins

Michael Huggins was appointed by Sheriff Thomas N. Bowler as the Assistant Superintendent of Operations of the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction in 2024. He is responsible for day-to-day operational movement within the Sheriff’s Office from facility maintenance, safety and security of inmates, staff, and volunteers. He oversees security leadership command of three shifts ensuring operational efficiency, while enhancing workplace development.

A native of Berkshire County his entire life, Assistant Superintendent Huggins began his career with the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office in 2000 as a Correctional Officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2007, then Lieutenant in 2008, serving as the Inmate Disciplinary Officer, and assisting command staff with shift operations. In 2013, he was promoted to Major, an assumed the role of Director of Security for the Sheriff’s Office where he was tasked with enforcing the policies and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office. He was then promoted to Assisted Deputy Superintendent of Operations in 2021.

In 2004, he began his career in becoming an instructor of Defensive Tactics as a Correctional Officer, focusing not only on hands on control, but mastering the ability to verbally de-escalate highly intense situations. He also became a certified instructor of less-leather munitions, taking his mastery of communications, and his ability to lead by example in teaching tactical response officers and new recruits. In 2022, he became a certified law enforcement agent under the Massachusetts Post Commission. He also became a certified Jail Administer under the American Jail Association in 2023.
